The Five Precepts of Self Defense reflect the values that Big John Kauo has incorporated into his life. 1. Uphold the principles of propriety and courtesy. 2. Cultivate the spirit of effort; 3. Perfect the mind of patience; 4. Lead the way of truth; 5. Do not lose self control or act in a violent manner. Big John began his journey into the world of martial arts in 1948. Under the direction of Sensei Sokei Kotagon. He learned Judo, a Japanese martial art based on the technique of Jui Jitsu. Judo was the only Martial Arts offered on Kaua'i at the time and he enjoyed the competition. In the 1960's, a new karate school started in Honolulu called Kenpo headed by one of Hawaii's greatest boxers Marino Tiwanak. A branch school in Hanapepe opened and after 4 years, Big John received his Black Belt. He opened his own dojo at the All Saint's Gym in Kapa'a. Over the years he furthered his knowledge and earned Black Belts in many different styles including Shotukan, Tae Kwan Do, So Back Do and Ed Parker's Kenpo-style. Big John took the best of his training and in these arts and developed it into his own unique style: punches from the Kenpo-style, the kicks from Tae Kwan Do-style, Jui jitsu rolls and use of pressure points while avoiding sticks & knives. Chuck Norris even helped him teach his teen and keiki classes in the Kenpo Style. Not every thing in his life is martial arts, Big John was nicknamed "The Gentle Giant" by a Coco Palms guests who recognized his gentler side. This musical talent was developed early by singing in the choir under the direction of his mother Lorna Hano Kauo and then later at Kamehameha schools. His students have included members from the Kaua'i Police Dept. where he met Grand Master of Kali, Floro Villabrille. He was a great influence and Big John claims, "He always told me, in life, to reach for the stars! This is what I have tried to do and have enjoyed my life this far. "
